With more than 30 years of financial planning and investment management experience, Tim Schoeffler joined CIC Wealth in March 2010. Working out of the Gaithersburg office, Tim helps people understand financial principles, from the the most complex investments to day-to-day budgeting, that affect their personal lives.

As an Investment Advisor Representative of Commonwealth, Tim helps people by managing their investments to generate income (if they are retired), to grow (if they are still working), or to give to charity and family (if they are so inclined).

Tim began his career in 1979 at Merrill Lynch in New York City, where he was an equity research specialist. He joined EF Hutton in 1982 as national product director, for Hutton’s mutual fund group. In 1988 he joined Oppenheimer Funds as the Mid-Atlantic’s regional vice president, covering Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia and West Virginia. His role was to educate financial advisors on Oppenheimer’s products and services.

After 12 years with Oppenheimer, he joined GE Financial, subsequently known as Genworth, where he specialized in developing retirement income plans for clients. He subsequently worked for several years at Allianz, positioning the company’s retirement income strategies. In 2007, he joined Curian Capital, a registered investment advisor, based in Denver which is a subsidiary of Jackson National Life Insurance Company.

Tim has been registered as a Series 7 General Securities Representative since 1979 and also has his Series 63 (Uniform Securities Agent) and Series 65 (Investment Advisor agent) registrations currently with Commonwealth Financial Network, Member FINRA/SIPC, a Registered Investment Adviser.

He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and a graduate of Georgetown University’s Executive Certification in Financial Planning Program. He also has earned the ACCREDITED INVESTMENT FIDUCIARY® designation. From 1992-94, he attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School’s Securities Industry institute.

Tim graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York with a BA in History. He is a past president of Colgate’s Washington DC President’s Club. He also attended Tulane University in New Orleans and he graduated high school from Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts.

Tim has lived in the Washington DC area for 26 years and has renovated four historical homes. He currently lives in his most recent project in DuPont Circle. In his spare time, Tim enjoys traveling, skiing and reading, especially in the areas of history and politics.
